Random City Generator
Use this random city generator to pick a city in the United States or around the world. For US results, filter cities by state or population range; for global results, narrow the list by country or region. Each result can include useful geographic details instead of returning only a city name.
How the Random City Generator Works
This tool draws from a curated geographical database of verified cities. Rather than generating fictional city names, every entry represents a real municipality with documented population figures and geographical coordinates.
When you initiate a draw, the candidate pool is filtered according to your active geographic criteria (such as minimum population thresholds or state selections). A cryptographically unbiased index is then sampled using crypto.getRandomValues() to ensure fair, uniform probability.
Pick a Random City in the United States
If you are looking for a random US city generator to explore places across America, this tool supports all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
You can narrow your search to pick a random city in America from a specific state like California, Texas, Florida, or New York, or select an entire U.S. Census region (Northeast, Midwest, South, or West). Whether you need a random American city generator for writing fiction, conducting regional market tests, or finding spontaneous travel destinations, the results include both state abbreviations and population statistics.
Choose Cities by State or Population
Filtering by population prevents results from skewing too heavily toward tiny rural townships or giant metropolitan areas:
- Major Metros (500k+ to 1M+): Cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, and Philadelphia.
- Mid-Sized Cities (100k+ to 250k+): Regional hubs like Boise, Richmond, Des Moines, Salt Lake City, and Grand Rapids.
- State Capitals: Filter specifically to study or quiz yourself on state government seats.
City Data and Sources
TinyTools does not use AI hallucinations or synthetic town names. All city data is sourced from public domain geographic records:
- United States Cities: U.S. Census Bureau Annual Estimates of the Resident Population for Incorporated Places (Vintage 2023).
- World Cities: United Nations Statistics Division & GeoNames public domain geographical database.
- Filtering Process: Municipalities are grouped by ISO country codes, administrative states/provinces, and Census regions.
