Plan the Layout Before Cutting Molding

The hardest part of picture frame molding (also commonly spelled moulding) is usually getting the rectangles to look balanced across the full wall. Enter the margins and gaps you want to preserve, and the calculator divides the remaining space evenly between the frames.

How Much Molding Will I Need?

Once the frame width and height are known, each rectangle is simply a perimeter. The calculator adds those perimeters together and applies your waste allowance so the material estimate reflects more than the visible finished length.

Frame Width = (Available Width - Left Margin - Right Margin - ((Columns - 1) × Horizontal Gap)) / Columns
Frame Height = (Available Height - Top Margin - Bottom Margin - ((Rows - 1) × Vertical Gap)) / Rows
Individual Frame Perimeter = 2 × (Frame Width + Frame Height)
Total Molding Length = Frame Perimeter × Total Frames

Check the Wall, Not Just the Math

Outlets, switches, furniture, vents, door casing, and walls that are not perfectly square can change where a frame looks best. Treat the calculated layout as a starting point and mark the wall before making final cuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate picture frame molding spacing?

Subtract total margins and gaps between boxes from the overall wall width, then divide by the number of boxes. For example, on a 144" wall with 3 boxes, 4" margins, and 4" gaps, (144 - 8 - 8) / 3 = 42.67" per box.

How much molding do I need for one wall?

Calculate 2 × (Width + Height) for one box, multiply by the total number of boxes on the wall, and add a 15% waste allowance for mitered corners.

Should the gaps between molding boxes be equal?

Yes. Keeping the spacing between shadow boxes identical to the top, bottom, and side margins gives the wall an intentional, custom architectural look.

How much extra molding should I buy?

We recommend a 15% waste allowance. Every rectangle requires four 45-degree corner miters, meaning you will produce triangular cutoff waste on almost every single cut.
