Online Home & DIY Tools
Plan common DIY projects without doing the measurements by hand. These free home improvement calculators help you work out spacing, material quantities, trim lengths, and wall layouts before you start cutting or buying supplies.
Wall & Trim Calculators
Wall trim projects look simple until you start working out equal spacing, board quantities, corners, openings, and waste. These calculators handle the repetitive math so you can compare layouts and plan materials before installation.
Board & Batten Calculator
Plan even board and batten spacing, compare layouts, estimate trim length, and preview the wall layout with a visual diagram.
Wainscoting Calculator
Plan wainscoting panel spacing, stile and rail dimensions, trim length, material quantities, and wall layout.
Baseboard Calculator
Calculate how much baseboard trim you need from room dimensions, wall lengths, doors, waste, board length, and material price.
Wall Panel Calculator
Calculate how many wall panels you need from wall size, panel dimensions, openings, and waste allowance with visual layout preview.
Picture Frame Molding Calculator
Plan picture frame molding with even margins and gaps. Calculate frame dimensions, molding length, material quantities, and wall layout.
Practical Wall Trim Guidelines
Measure at Installation Height
Walls and baseplates are rarely straight. Measure wall width at the exact height where rails, battens, or moldings will sit to avoid surprise gaps during install.
Account for Obstacles
Mark out electrical outlets, light switches, heating registers, and door casings before committing to a batten or molding box layout.
Clear Gap vs Center-to-Center
Use clear gap measurements when creating physical spacer blocks between boards. Use center-to-center lines when snapping chalk or laser layout lines.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate equal spacing between trim boards?
Subtract the combined width of all vertical boards from the total wall width, then divide that remaining space by the number of gaps. The calculators on this page compute both the clear opening gap and the center-to-center measurement automatically.
How much extra trim should I purchase for waste?
For straight board and batten or baseboard runs, 10% waste is standard. For decorative molding frames with 45-degree miter cuts at every corner, plan for 15% waste to account for corner cutoffs and board defects.
Can I save or print the calculated layouts?
Yes. Every calculator includes one-click "Copy Results" to grab formatted measurements for your notes and a "Print / Export" button to print layout elevations directly from your browser.
