Board & Batten Calculator

Planning board and batten is mostly a spacing problem. Enter your wall size, batten width, and either the number of battens or the spacing you want. The calculator will work out an even layout and estimate how much material the wall needs.

How to Use the Board and Batten Calculator

Measure the full width of the wall before choosing a layout. Enter the batten width you plan to use, then choose whether you want to start with a fixed number of battens or an approximate gap. If the first and last battens will sit against the wall edges, leave the edge-batten option enabled.

The result shows the exact clear space between battens as well as the center-to-center measurement. Use the clear gap when cutting spacer blocks; use the center-to-center figure when marking layout lines.

How Board and Batten Spacing Is Calculated

An even layout has to account for the width of the battens themselves. The usable space is the wall width minus the combined width of all battens. That remaining distance is divided by the number of gaps in the layout.

// When edge battens are included (N ≥ 2 battens across wall width W, batten width B):
Number of gaps = N - 1
Clear Gap G = (W - (N × B)) / (N - 1)
Center-to-Center C = G + B
// When edge battens are NOT included:
Number of gaps = N + 1
Clear Gap G = (W - (N × B)) / (N + 1)

Worked Calculation Example

Wall width: 144 in
Battens: 8
Batten width: 2.5 in
Edge battens included
1. Total batten width: 8 × 2.5 = 20 in
2. Remaining space: 144 - 20 = 124 in
3. Gaps: 8 - 1 = 7 gaps
4. Clear spacing: 124 / 7 = 17.71 in
5. Center-to-center: 17.71 + 2.5 = 20.21 in

Before You Buy the Trim

Real walls are rarely perfect. Measure at more than one height, especially in older rooms, and base the layout on the dimension that matches where the trim will actually sit. Add a waste allowance for bad cuts, defects, and boards you may need to match for appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should board and batten be?

Spacing typically ranges from 12 to 20 inches depending on ceiling height and overall wall width. Narrow walls or half-wall board and batten look best with 10 to 14 inch spacing, while wide primary accent walls frequently look balanced around 16 to 18 inches.

Do I include the batten width when calculating spacing?

Yes. Clear gap is the visible drywall space between boards. Center-to-center adds one board width to that gap. When cutting a wooden spacer block for installation, use the clear gap.

Should board and batten start at the edge of the wall?

Yes, if you want full corner framing. If you are meeting existing door trim, casing, or window frames, you can turn off edge battens and space interior boards equally between the casings.

How much extra material should I buy?

We recommend a 10% waste allowance. This covers snipping off factory rough ends, defective or warped lumber, and minor cut errors.
